Lawn seed amount per m²: examples with calculation
The amount of lawn seed is area times the sowing rate per square meter. The rate is printed on the pack of your mix. Here are three examples with the calculator's guide values.
Example 1: new lawn, 200 m²
200 m² × 30 g = 6,000 g, so 6 kg of seed. With packs of 5 kg you need 2 packs. With starter fertilizer at 30 g per m², another 6 kg of fertilizer is needed, which is 1 bag of 10 kg.
Example 2: overseeding, 50 m²
50 m² × 15 g = 750 g, so 0.75 kg. One pack of 1 kg is enough.
Example 3: shade lawn, 100 m²
100 m² × 35 g = 3,500 g, so 3.5 kg. Shade mixes are usually sown a little denser.
Typical mistakes
- Sowing too thick: the seed then stands too close and the grasses compete.
- Estimating the area instead of measuring it: measure length and width, and split irregular areas into rectangles.
- Dosing fertilizer by feel instead of by the pack.
The values are common guide values. The manufacturer's information on the pack is what counts.
